Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
