Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
